Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is necessary for sites which need a high profile in the Search Engine Rankings Pages (SERPS) and to get highly placed you need to follow a few simple guidelines.

Google is the most widely used search engine, but the techniques which can improve your Google positions are not necessarily the same ones which can help improve your position with Bing or Yahoo.

The guidelines below should help you get your falls identified so you can begin to put them to use for climbing your search engine rankings.

Your Title Tag should contain your primary keyword, one should contain closely related words and two others should contain distant related words.

Your title tag should be a short description of your business and one should be different for each page.

Your title tags should be researched – not blindly copied from huge amounts of sites. You need to research the correct keywords and phrases that your customers will be using before you even attempt to start optimising your site. Your keywords should be contained in your title tags as much as possible. If possible, your exact keywords should be closer to the beginning of your title tags than your companies name.

Your H1 tag should be used once on the page with your primary keyword as close to the beginning of the H1 tag as possible.

All images should have the ‘Alt’ attributes set to the keywords which you want to be shown when the image is used.

Your site should have a sitemap generated which contains all the main pages.

Your site design should be designed to be as accessible as possible and your calls to action should be present on each page.

Any pages which need updates should be updated on the site map.

Your site should contain good content.

Regularly updated and fresh content is a positive for your site. If your site always contains new content on a regular basis then your site will be favourably regarded by the search engines.

You should try and optimise each page which has a single relation to another.

Getting Ranked in GoogleThe easiest way of getting your new website onto the first page of Google is to do a social media marketing. If your site is new, it will be a lot easier for you to get a hold of potential customers and market to them.

You can do this by being active in Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Delicious and DirectionDraft.

If your site is already on the first page of Google then make sure you use Google Analytics to track your results. It is not going to be easy but it will be possible.

Building Backlinks for your SiteYour Number One priority should be to day in and day out to building backlinks for your site. Not only are backlinks important for search engine rankings they are also important for branding your site.

If you day in and day out you will start to notice that your site starts to pull together and builds backlinks.

Many people look at Google Analytics as being the most important set of information to look at in terms of generating backlinks. Although it is very important and can help you, the best bit is that it doesn’t cost you anything to have an Analytics account and you can check out your traffic and keywords.

The main reason of setting up Analytics is that it will help you pursue keywords that are getting good traffic from Google. From here you can try and convert them to subscribers.
